In the 1st game, Team Blair (missing their spiritual leader) answered the question of whether they could rebound from their first loss in no uncertain terms. 5 goals in the 1st, 3 more in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd to win easily 12-4 over Team Bill. Team Bill was unable to consistently solve Gord and Team Blair’s Big 3 of Ian, Jeff and Matt scored 8 of the 12 goals. Hmmm…. 2 blowouts out of 18 games so far this season, both against 1 goalie…..better not travel down that road of inquiry, just put it down to random coincidence.

Second game was a game of momentum, Team Russ jumped out to an early lead, 5-2 at the end of the 1st period. Though Team Russ added another goal early in the 2nd, momentum switched and Team Juniors scored 6 straight, 3 in the 2nd and 3 more early in the 3rd to pull ahead. And then the momentum changed…again, Team Russ scored 1 on a penalty shot, another goal and then a 3rd to pull ahead 9-8. Team Juniors were able to score a final goal late but were unable to capitalize on an end of the game power play and the game ended in a 9 – 9 tie.

Entering the mid-season All-Star break, the fan balloting is now closed and, not surprisingly, there were no votes for any individual players, well, truthfully there were no votes …period – either we have no All-Star calibre players, no fans that are interested enough to do a write in ballot or it has something to do with our nonexistent social media policy and our inability to stir up any fan interest…Oh well!  A week off and hopefully everyone can rest their injuries and get themselves motivated for the stretch run.

Interesting evening of games – results were not quite as expected – a sign of change in the LMLHL power structure or just a random data point.

In the first game Team Juniors started strong with a quick goal 10 seconds in but Team Bill came back hard. New addition Brent Yost put in a couple of nice goals to help put Team Bill up by 5 but Team Juniors fought back with a couple of goals near the end of the period – at the end of the 1, Team Bill led 6-3. The 2nd period was mostly Team Juniors – scoring 4 while only allowing 1, the period ending  with the teams tied at 7. Team Bill seemed to have the faceoff thing figured out for a few minutes at the start of the 3rd, winning a couple of draws cleanly and scoring on the subsequent quick breaks to pull ahead by 2. After that flurry of goals, both teams settled down, each scoring 1. With Team Bill carefully managing the last few minutes to hold on to a 2 goal lead  the game ended with a final score Team Bill 10  – Team Juniors 8.  Overall, a quick, fast paced game with both teams looking very strong and competent (not a descriptor usually applied to London Masters lacrosse teams!). The victory wasn’t enough to lift Team Bill out of the basement but the points race is tightening up and interesting roster developents are on the horizon. Rumours are swirling that Jon Low is contemplating coming out of retirement as early as next week – this can only make Team Bill even stronger….BUT….salary cap issues may require releasing one of their high priced free agents to a team with more cap space. We’ll have to see if TSN will set aside some broadcast time to cover LMLHL free agent/trading deadline activity…probably not.

A number of questions were front and center going in to the 2nd game – could Team Blair maintain their unbeaten record for 2015? Could Team Russ remain competitive with their top scorers injured or playing hurt? ProLine had Team Blair at +1.5 going in but things changed quickly once the game started. Moving Russ back to mainly defense and with the late (as usual) arrival of the JKOW, the game was definitely on. With Jason relegated to a setup position Team Russ’s younger speedsters were allowed to show their prowess – a couple of goals from the Reed twins and multiple pretty goals from Dylan English set Team Blair back on its heels. At the end of 1, Team Russ was up 6-2 and in the 2nd, despite a solid wakeup (or bell ringing) shot to the goalies’ head, Team Blair was only able to score 1 leaving Team Russ still up 6-3 heading in to the final frame. Team Blair started the 3rd with a couple of quick goals but stingy (and arguably close to the line..not saying which side of the line) defense kept the game close and Team Blair started showing signs of frustration. With the game close and competitive, tempers flared and some chirping started to surface. The refs finally had enough and a couple of penalties were called but tempers boiled over and Jeff W. was ejected for …expressing his opinion a bit too forcefully…!  A late delay of game penalty against Team Russ made the game interesting but solid ball control and an empty net goal ran out the clock for a hard earned victory – final score Team Russ 9 – Team Blair 6.

All the runner’s pinnies are now in and distributed. I have posted the numbers that I have recorded as being issued on the roster page and will also list the numbers/sizes that are still available. Please let me know if my numbering records are incorrect. Initial indications are that there were a few players with a somewhat biased/rose coloured/dated view of their body self image – size MEDIUM…really?  Let me know over the next week or so if your pinnie is really too small and we might be able to get it physically modified – add a couple of inches in side panels and maybe a strip along the bottom. Could also switch out a few mediums for larges but we are somewhat limited in the number of additional large pinnies available. Going forward it would be good if you can remember to bring your pinnie to each game – wearing blue or white when everyone else is green or grey should result in some serious mockery for your sense of colour/style or ability to pack your equipment bag/dress yourself without parental/spousal assistance.

Heading in to the AllStar break, next is week #9 –  Wednesday June 24, 2015 Kinsmen Arena

Team Blair  vs.  Team Bill     8:00pm – 9:00pm

Team Juniors  vs.  Team Russ     9:00pm – 10:00pm

With their first loss of the season, can Team Blair get back on track or will they implode and self destruct as was the case last year? With recent roster additions and possible impending changes, is a rebuilt Team Bill ready to make some noise? Is the Team Juniors’ 2 game losing streak random or can they return to 2014 championship form heading in to the mid season break? Will revised roles for the Team Russ veterans make the team strong enough to continue to be in the running? How will available free agents change overall league dynamics? See you all next week to find the answers.

WEEK #8 JUNE 17, 2015 GAMES

Tonight’s games Wednesday June 17, 2015 Kinsmen Arena

Team Juniors  vs.  Team Bill     8:00pm – 9:00pm

Team Blair  vs.  Team Russ     9:00pm  – 10:00pm

Rest of the pinnies have arrived and will be distributed tonight.

New look, new philosophy – look good on the floor, play good on the floor – at least that’s the theory…we’ll see how it pans out over the rest of the season. Approximately half of the new pinnies are in and have been distributed, the rest (mostly mediums) should be complete and distributed next Wednesday. Looks like there may have been a few individuals that still have their body self image stuck on what it was in minor – M size pinnies look a …bit…. form fitting. We should have enough additional L sizes to fit everyone though not with everyone’s particular requested number fetish. We will see how things sort out next week and proceed from there. Please try to bring your own pinnie each week (Bill!?) so that the numbers on the scoresheet sort of match the correct players.

In the 1st game, league leading Team Blair was against 2nd place contenders Team Juniors. 1st period started with a flurry of goals at both ends resulting in Team Blair exiting the period leading  5-4. 2nd period was mostly Team Juniors adding 4 goals and only allowing Team Blair to score 2. 3rd period was all Team Blair – Trevor shut the door on numerous Team Junior shots and Ian maintained his scoring touch with Team Blair scoring 3 goals and shutting out the Juniors completely – final score Team Blair  10 – Team Juniors 8.

The 2nd game promised to be interesting – Team Russ was missing both Russ and the JKOW due to injuries and Team Bill was bolstered by the mid season addition of free agent Brent Yost. 1st period was back and forth with lots of chances at both ends but both goalies were strong – the period ended with Team Russ up 2-1. 2nd period was more back and forth with Team Bill scoring 4 and only allowing 2, ending the period up by 1. 3rd period was hard fought with the lead changing hands a couple of times but Team Russ was able to score late on a precision seeing eye shot to seal the victory Team Russ 9 – Team Bill 8. Fun game to watch, fast and competitive.

Next week is week #8 Wednesday, June 17, 2015 Kinsmen arena

Team Juniors  vs.  Team Bill     8:00pm – 9:00pm

WEEK #7 JUNE 10, 2015 GAMES

Tonight’s games Wednesday, June 10, 2015 Kinsmen Arena

Team Blair  vs.  Team Juniors     8:00pm – 9:00pm

Team Bill  vs.  Team Russ     9:00pm – 10:00pm

Portion of the new pinnies are in, Large and XLarge – will try to distribute prior to each of the games.  See you all tonight.

I’m liking the progression of these tournament posts – there is a certain inevitability about them…at least so far.

After the surprisingly easy drive to Peterborough for the 11pm start, London Seniors were faced with their typical roster issues – a couple of injuries, a couple of late regrets…9 runners…sigh… New pinnies were distributed and we looked pretty impressive on the floor, at least until the first face off whistle.  A fairly nondescript game against Halton Hills ending with a 2-8 loss. With a few additional (key) runners the score would have been much closer and a 2nd 2015 victory over Halton could have been possible (maybe).

After much deliberation and strategy discussions after the Friday night game, we were on the floor Saturday noon against the RezDogs. After falling behind early, London came back strong and was coasting with a 6-2 lead late in the 3rd. What COULD go worng?  RezDogs score 1 to make it 6-3 with 3 minutes left…no problem, then another with about a minute and a half left, 6-4, still no problem…right? A couple of stops, a couple of loose balls and London has the ball with 30 sec left and an unnamed player (I promised Mark I wouldn’t reveal his identity) runs up the boards, in full control, no one pressing and instead of passing the ball to kill time just rolls it along the boards. Wait, what…. check the point spread and betting records! RezDogs come back hard, shoot, but, surprisingly, the save is made (or they hit the goalie…whatever), less than 15 sec left, goalie in control of the ball behind the net, …waits 5 sec and lofts the ball to an open player up the floor …. and passes it right to the RezDogs player 10 ft in front of an empty net who makes no mistake and lobs it in to the centre of the netting …sigh…. 6-5 with 7 sec left. With the JKOW injured, RezDogs win the faceoff easily, press and get another shot but hit the goalie stick…barely. This time no mistake and the clock runs out for a London win, Werewolves 6 – RezDogs 5. Nothing if not exciting. Probably should have retired and gone home at that point in time.

Unfortunately 2 more games had to be played resulting in losses of 3-8 to Brampton and 5-14 to Niagara. Still, 3 wins for the season so far – haven’t seen that in recent memory. Next up is the Fergus tournament July 17-19 weekend when we should have our full roster back and hopefully make a stab at wins 4,5 and maybe even 6 and 7 – hope springs eternal!

1st game – pffftttt! – the less said the better. Team Juniors 11  – Team Russ 3.

2nd game started out close, few goals and lots of back and forth. 1st period ended tied at 1. In the 2nd, Team Bill pulled ahead by one early but the rest of the period was all team Blair.  Team Blair’s Jeff and Ian combination exploded for 4 quick goals and the period ended with Team Blair ahead 6-2. The 3rd period settled down to more back and forth and the game ended with another Team Blair victory 7 – 4 over Team Bill.

London Werewolves are off to Peterborough for a tournament this weekend with the first of the new pinnies promised. Hopefully a new look will translate into another win…or two. Hope springs eternal.

Next week is Week #7, the start of the 3rd go round – Wednesday June 10, Kinsmen Arena

Team Blair  vs.   Team Juniors     8:00pm – 9:00pm

Team Bill  vs.  Team Russ     9:00pm – 10:00pm
